News stories from the School and Old Suttonian communities

The end of last week saw Storm Eunice rip through the country with devastating effect. Whilst the School thankfully only suffered minor damage, many within the School community were less fortunate with power outages and trees felled across the local area and beyond. Such was the devastation, it brought back memories of the Great Storm of 1987, which caused far more significant damage to the School. We are grateful to Jeremy Towner (1988 W), then an Upper Sixth boarder in Westminster, for sharing the photos in the gallery below from October 1987. The damage back then included the removal of a large section of the Refectory roof and the destruction of the School's longstanding Observatory, which sat beside the Squash Court on the boundary between Lower and BM. By far the biggest damage was caused by fallen trees however, with Prefects' Lawn (as pictured above), Cornwallis and the Lambe's Quad all affected.
Fast forward 35 years and, as the clean-up operation began last weekend, it is worth reflecting on an occasion when we were less fortunate. Our thoughts are with those in the School community who have been adversely affected this time around.
