The OSRA held its third Blues' Match at NRA Bisley on 23rd-24th October. The Match now in its third year was designed to create a level playing field for shooters with mixed ability teams, as well as to provide an opportunity for different Old Suttonians to take on the role of Captain. Unique to 2021 was the addition of two current Suttonians, Daniel Wild and Callum Davis (both Lower Sixth), as well as Kent and England shooter, Dr Yusef Ali.
Beginning with some theory, including plotting and positional training, the Match began in earnest on Saturday afternoon. Three teams competed at 300 and 600 yards, with captains Freddie Pawlik (2011 M), Harry Percival (2014 W) and Chris Dale (2007 C). On the Saturday, Chris Dale's team were in the lead, aided by a Highest Possible Score (50.7/50.10) by Captain Dale, alongside team member Harrison Sharpe (2016 M) only dropping one point across both ranges. All was to play for though on the Sunday, as the teams faced 1000 yards, the toughest distance for target rifle. With the philosophy of getting down to the range early, Freddie Pawlik's team was able to find the bullseye and claimed victory of the weekend with a score of 448.43.
Special mention must go to Freddie for leading the winning team, to Harriet Aburn (2018 L) for an excellent performance landing her third overall individually, and to the Suttonians, Callum and Daniel, for holding their own and beating many of the Old Suttonian scores at short range. It was a fantastic weekend and we look forward now to the Shooting Open Day on Saturday 20th November.
